The Basic Components of a Pageant
The purpose of a pageant is to give women an opportunity to
showcase their talents and abilities in order to better themselves. Often times
a pageant is used to find a spokeswoman for a variety of charities or other
worthy organizations. Pageants are also used by organizations to determine a
winner of a scholarship or some other huge prize. A pageant is often elaborate
with different categories where contestants are scored and compete for a final
score that lends to the winner of a pageant. Listed below are the basic
components of a pageant and the purpose each category has to finding a suitable
winner.
Personal Interview Category
The personal interview given to each contestant during a
pageant generally accounts for the most points for each lady. This is a process
where a contestant is asked a specific question and must give a well thought
out answer. You will usually hear questions related to world peace,
environmental and safety issues, or other pertinent issues going on in the
country or world today, and how the contestant could make things better. The
contestants do not know what the question will be ahead of time, so it shows
how well they think on their feet, and how well they maintain their composure
under pressure.
Talent Show Category
The main purpose of the talent portion of a pageant is to
let contestants show their creativity and uniqueness. Each contestant has her
own talent, and this is her opportunity to show others her accomplishments.
This is the next portion of the pageant that accounts for the most points in
scoring each participant. Some contestants sing, while others dance or play an
instrument. Contestants are generally judged on their technical skills, stage
appearance, and ability to perform with professionalism. It gives the judges an
opportunity to see how a pageant winner would best serve the public, whether it
be through speaking engagements, singing at charity events to bring in people,
or something similar that could help raise awareness to a particular cause.
Fitness Category
The fitness category has changed somewhat over the years.
Whereas it was once solely called the swimsuit competition (and in some cases
still is), it is also acceptable to be called a fitness competition. The
purpose of this category is to get a physical look at how well the contestants
stay in shape. Judges are looking for a woman who is physically fit and in good
health. Judges also look to see if the contestants make good choices for their
outfits, as far as personal taste.
Evening Gown Category
The evening gown portion of the pageant is where contestants
show judges how graceful they are, and a look into what styles of clothing they
like to wear. This is a chance for contestants to be poised and sophisticated.
Judges look for women who are able to act graceful and elegant.
Pageants have long been a popular way for contestants to
compete for fame and prizes. They are used all over the world to pick the best
of the crop. Pageants may have different or additional categories than those
explained above, but these are by far the most popular categories used.
