Chinese Father's Day: August 8 2009

As most countries celebrate father's day on June 21st, China celebrates theirs every August 8.

The first Chinese Father's Day was celebrated in Shanghai, August 8 1945. But why August 8? It's because the number 8 is pronounced as ba in Mandarin the same as father or Papa the day itself is even BaBa Day.

Some would say that celebrations like father's day, mother's day, grandfather's day. etc are highly commercialized for business gains. Even if it's true, isn't it just right to give our love ones a special day just for them (aside from their birthdays)? Thanking them for the sacrifices they made for the family. And most of all, celebrations like this will instill to the young minds the importance of family, responsibility, love and affection.

So as early as this week, we are putting on our Chinese and Vietnamese dresses on sale as our way of honoring our Chinese friends. :)

A Child Healed Their Broken Hearts

Really touching article, http://tinyurl.com/l26x35. Perfect example of how a family can rise from a very difficult situation.

The unconditional love of a child truly brings closure to a wounded heart. I bet your child can take away the stress you feel when you get home after work. It's amazing how children make us crazy at times but still able to make us feel proud.

Hopefully, the article brings inspiration to you and your family.

Great Wedding Idea: Party all the way!

Planning your wedding and thinking of a great way to spice up your big day? Well, Jill and Kevin might have the greatest idea you might have :) Here's a video of a unique and creative wedding they had:

Cool right? The entire entourage has been invited at the Today's show to do a repeat performance since this video went viral over the Internet. This is one of the videos that never fails to put a smile on my face and I totally understand why it's getting a lot of attention :)

Their wedding was fun, creative, simple yet so full of love. Look at how the entourage's dresses are simple even the bride's wedding gown is simple but I bet this is one wedding that's hard to forget! It just shows that you don't need to break the bank to have an unforgettable wedding.

It would have been super nice though if flower girls on flower girl dresses where dancing with the entourage :)

Nikon makes big fuss at BlogHer event

Nikon was one of the sponsors who INVITED Moms from the BlogHer event to promote their product. It was a huge leap for the company to tap on the most read Mommy bloggers in the US ( or maybe around the world), what made the event really sad was that the Nikon party organizers chose a restaurant that does not allow babies. What were they thinking? Here are my reactions on the event:

1. Nikon should have realized that BlogHer is for MOMMIES. BlogHer is a baby and kid friendly event because it knows its audience--which are Moms who have babies and kids to look after to.

2. Nikon should have welcomed the kids with open arms because most Moms buy cameras to bookmark the growing milestones of their kids! Nikon could have used that for their marketing strategy.

3. It was a lousy mistake that merits an apology from the company.

4. Who are the Nikon party organizers? Maybe they're not Moms. Nikon should "fit" organizers according to the event.

5. Okay it's a HUGE mistake but I don't think a boycott is a must. It's a lesson learned the hard way for Nikon and let's just hope no other company follows their grave mistake.

As for the Moms who were turned away from the restaurant, my heart bleeds knowing they did it because of your kids. I have a kid too and I know it's the hardest job in the world being a mom or a parent at that. Now, it's your prerogative to boycott or not. I know the world will understand whatever decision you make :)

Total Eclipse

No I'm not referring to the song but the event that has happened around Asia earlier today. There was a total solar eclipse seen on some parts of Asia like India and some regions of China. Then partial total eclipse on most countries of Asia.

People gathered around to witness the rare event. In India, thousands gathered to personally experience the event. In the Philippines, astrologers and fanatics gathered as well. Even though there was just partial solar eclipse, they didn't let it pass. Even Science teachers took the opportunity to teach their students about eclipse by demonstration. Some used films to look at the sun, moon and earth others used peepholes, and some used a pail and water.

Many families enjoyed the rare sight which will happen again on 2032.

Cheers!

Recycling a Pageant Dress

*A repost from EliteDresses collection of free articles.

The problem with many “special” occasion dresses is it can seldom be used more than once, such as a wedding or bride’s maid dress. A pageant dress, on the other hand, is more in the gray area. By definition, a pageant is merely a parade or procession so a pageant dress can reflect many different styles and can be appropriate for non-pageant functions. The trick to recycling a pageant dress is in selecting a dress of good material in a solid color, cut along classical lines and simple enough to accommodate different accessories depending on the occasion.

An A-line gown is always a good choice for recycling a pageant dress. The A-line is form-fitting at the bodice and then flares out from the waist. It is a very flattering style even if you are bottom heavy, and can be accessorized with a shall, fancy belt or an elaborate short vest with a stand up collar. Any one of these accessories can change the look completely. The function can range from informal to formal with just a change of hairstyle, shoes and bag.

Another good dress style for recycling a pageant dress is the tea-length dress. This is a mid-calf length dress that usually features a flirty, hemmed skirt. It is fun yet demure, and with the right height heels, jewelry and hairstyle can be a striking pageant dress or pretty prom dress.

For younger pageant participants, the bouffant skirt (with petticoat) style dress is often the pageant dress of choice because it is just too adorable yet undeniably formal. In recycling a pageant dress in this style, it is simply enough to increase or decrease the flare provided by the petticoat so that it can be used as an ordinary party dress or for first communion (provided it is white).

As long as the dress is simply but tastefully made and in solid colors, it will be easy to accessorize and recycle for other occasion. Recycling a pageant dress is practical and coming up with different ways to do so challenges the imagination.

Is your Teen Tomboyish?

Does your teen tell you that wearing girls dresses is not her "type"? And do you have trouble letting her wear one? Experts say, some girls do experience tomboyish stage at certain age and that their taste for clothes and things will eventually change. There are also different predisposing factors why teens have different likes and dislikes. It could be that they have peer influence and they just want to be "in". But as a parent you should also check on other factors such as misinformed teens, deeper family issues, and other possible factors of her gender issues. Sometimes, they need more attention as in with counselor and all that but often, it's just a passing stage. You should be able to tell which side your teen is.

It could be frustrating for Moms to have a tomboyish daughter because as Moms, you find joy in dressing your teens. But remember not to be too pushy on your likes. Teens can now decide for what they want and pushing them to something they don't like would make them do exactly the opposite.

Instead try giving her options on what to wear. Let her wear dresses that's not heavy on designs, or you can show her pictures of popular teens on party dresses.
Bottom line, it is also the responsibility of being a parent to respect the needs and wants of their kids.

Cheers to that!

Black on Weddings

For so long, the color black has been a no-no for Church weddings. Well at least on our part of the world it is. Even to this day, many brides prefer not to have black on their wedding day. For them it's a sign of bad luck and the color has too much sad aura.
But as I look on photos of friends and relatives who were married in the US, Europe, Australia and some part of Asia, I've seen the emergence of black--black flowergirl dress, black accessories, black and white motiff and so much more! Black starts to look good and cool on wedding scenarios and slowly it is gaining popularity.

How about you, did you use black as part of your wedding colors? Did you ask your guests not to wear black? (I knew some couples who did this.)

We all believe on different things but we all agree on one thing-- A bride's dream on her wedding day is of highest priority. Whatever the bride wants, the bride should get. Agree?

Potter Fever

I'm sure by this time you have gone to the nearest theatre to watch Harry and his friends because the moment it was NOW SHOWING, your kids dragged you to watch it. I'm also sure you have stories to share about your recent Potter experience. And I am so jealous! I have yet to watch it because I was really tied up. I have work by day and hands-on Mom by night so I really have no time. My daughter's 1.6 years old and only have her eyes on Dora and Barney plus she's not yet allowed at theatres. I am hoping that I get to watch it next week with my co-EliteDresser, Kat.

Instead I'm going to talk about a little trivia on Hermione's Yule ball dress. According to an insider (probably a rumor), the yule ball dress is worth $25,000! The fabric was from France and it was made of very fine and expensive chiffon cloth. It was so delicate that the fabric breaks easily. I'm no expert on expensive fabrics but are they really like that? You spend $$$ on something that will rip easily?Whew!
Anyway, Emma (Hermione) had to walk with utmost care with the party dress on and they kept 4 reserves of that dress on the set just in case it rips.
Some sewers and designers tried to imitate the dress but failed because according to them, it takes time and a lot of effort to copy it perfectly.
Well it only shows that the Harry Potter designer who did the Yule ball dress deserves a round of applause.

Still, I will not spend $25,000 on a dress that breaks easily! I'm sure you won't either.
Goodthing EliteDresses prides on carefully handpicked girls dresses that are affordable and of highest quality.

Ao Dai Cuoi History and Background

The Ao Dai Cuoi dates back to in one version, 1744 when Lord Vu Vuong of the Nguyen dynasty declared that men and women should wear clothes that are similar to what is today the Ao Dai Cuoi. There is also a Chinese influence as the similarity to the Qipao can be seen. The Ao Dai Cuoi top became a stiffer Mandarin style garment that is body fitting, that was split down the sides with long flowing pants underneath it. The top has a Mandarin Collar.

The colors of the Ao Dai Cuoi traditionally denoted the rank of the person wearing it. Purple had more status than blue. White pants denoted young women. More on the symbolic meaning of colors for Vietnamese.

The French Colonized Vietnam and had some influence on the Ao Dai Cuoi lengthening the top. In the 1950's, the top shrunk to it's current version where it comes to above the knees. Ao Dais are traditionally custom made giving a very flattering look. The Ao Dai Cuoi is cool to wear, since Viet Nam is a tropical country. Traditionally it is often worn with a pointed hat made out of palm leaves to protect against the sun. Now it is worn on special occasions such as Tet (Vietnamese New Year) and for weddings. During a wedding a bride may wear several different Ao Dais Cuoi. Brides often wear a crown like hat, called the khăn đóng made from silk brocade.

Do you and your Pre-teen have Conflicting Tastes in Dressing?

It's a classic situation for a mom/dad and the growing-independent child to not get along when it comes to dressing.

Once in a while you may see a parent-tween tandem in the store all pouty and tense. Reason: Conflicting tastes in choice of dress. A parent may be scandalized with the dress the tween chose. The dress could be inappropriate for the age of the child, or just plain "skanky". Child, on the other hand, just wants to fit in with the peer group. So mommy's horns and tween's horns lock in at the store, a major quarrel brewing up for home a little later, all because of a dress.

A tween's main concern is fitting in with the crowd. Tweens are also concerned not to be skanky. Your tween would not want that for herself too, so it is up to you and your excellent diplomatic skills to guide her well.

What to do?

First, look also at what her age group is wearing. Look at a LOT of kids, and see patterns in what they are wearing. Note the cute and okay ones, even if the look is new to you.

Then, before going to the store, set rules. Rules for length, what body parts are exposed, etc. Be considerate in setting the rules, based on how you studied the other kids' clothes.

Let her choose her clothes based on the rules. Only speak out when the rules are violated.
If you yourself are having a hard time approving, maybe a tip to remember is : "Would I let another person's child wear this?" If you answered yes, most likely it is okay to wear and you may be just having issues with your child's changing taste and ways. Just maybe. Something to think about.

There. Hope these help, and hope you and your tween have a peaceful time shopping.

If you can't stand the drama of choosing clothes in a public place, you can always shop online with your child for girl's dresses.

How do you choose your daughter's dresses?

How do you choose your daughter's dresses? Do you ask for their opinion or buy whatever suit your taste? Those are the questions that hover in my head when I look at my fast growing 1.6 year old baby girl.

Once in a while I give her little exercises to test her abilities to choose and decide for herself and it amazes me that she can really come to a solution. After giving her a bath, I ask her to go through her closet and choose whatever shirt or dress she wants to wear for the day. She'll be glad to do it (maybe because she sees Mommy rummaging at her own closet too? ) and would give me the one she chose. Just to test her some more, I'll get another shirt and ask her if she likes it instead. I'll know that she decided on the dress she picked early on because she would insist that she wear the one she picked. :)

But as they get older, they tend to choose dresses that are a bit too much for our taste, don't they?
I know because my Mom and I used to fight over which dress to wear hehehe..But nah, it's a matter of choosing which suits you both. One thing is for sure, I wouldn't make my daughter wear uncomfortable girl's dresses just to impress someone else. As early as today, I am picky with the type of garment I chose for her dresses. And I suggest you do the same too. Make sure that you choose the types that suits your weather. Like velvet is a no-no for summer. Even if the event is under an airconditioned room, chances are it will still be a bit warm because of all those other guests.

However, enjoy choosing and buying girl's dresses you think will look good on your daughter because sooner or later she'll be old enough to buy her own. :)

Little Black Dress

Black dresses are one of the few pieces that will never be part of the past. It's in fact a must-have for every wardrobe. If you are having doubts which colors fit your little girl, black is one of the nicest choice.

Pardon me for sounding so self absorbed but I truly like EliteDresses'

Black Flower Girl's Dress, sleeveless formal dress
Girl's beautiful Black sleeveless formal dress
List Price: $48.00
Our Price: $29.99
You Save $18.01!

The dress features Black satin top and black chiffon skirts. Black chiffon ribbon in back to create a beautiful bow. Two layers of skirts: Black chiffon over Black satin.

It's very functional. You can actually remove the little flowers on the shoulders if you want to wear it on a different occasion or you want to simplify the look. I also like how it holds up. It's not too poofy and it's not itchy. (I bet you know how some gowns are itchy and the girls complain about it endlessly)

Summer is all Fun!

Hey Moms! It's summer and the kids have lots of free time on their hands. Make it productive! Where did you sign them up? I bet most of you considered baseball, soccer or any other sports that your kids love. Some like to enroll their kids on artistic crafts such as painting, clay modelling, etc. And for some it's music like piano, dance, theater, etc.

I remember when it was still my time, I did ballet, hawaiian dance, swimming, piano, summer classes until I finally stick with tennis clinic every summer. Now I understand why my mom pushed me to join several classes each summer, it was to know which of those I like the most and which of those I excel the most.

I believe that we should allow our children be exposed to as much experiences as they can so they will find out which ones they want most. This way their interests are built and soon enough they will make the decision on their own---and please let them be.

There's also summer camp. I understand it's pretty big in the US. I haven't experience this but I have faint idea from the movies I've seen--I hope there are less mean girls on real life!

Bottom line, let our kids enjoy their summer break while nurturing their interests, their talents and their gifts. They deserve to enjoy it after a year of homework and exams! :)
