I've been around twitter and I realized there has been a lot of confusion between Japanese clothing and Chinese clothing. So in my attempt to clear the issue (and the hope of proper term usage) here's a helpful guide.
KIMONO is a Japanese clothing. The full length robes worn that the hem falls to the ankles and is wrapped around the body always left side over right side and is secured by a sash called, obi, which is tied at the back.
CHEONGSAM/QI PAO is a Chinese clothing. It's a body hugging one piece dress often with mandarin collar.

We may differ from a lot of things but at one point we stand in the same ground. We are all parents. We are all daughters and sons. With this, let me share this really touching video. *please prepare hankies*
Has anyone been married on Halloween? Is there a known urban legend or anything at all that says getting married on a Halloween is pure bad luck?
Wouldn't it be nice to be married and your guests are in their favorite Halloween costumes? And then there will be lots of cool games to think of! It'll be the fun and unique.
You can even set a Halloween themed wedding and make a spooktacular title :) Your cake could be shaped like Jack-o-lantern.
You can choose spooky Halloween themes or just a mild touch of Halloween. For centerpieces, you can buy cheap pumpkins from farmers who wouldn't need them anymore. Use white and orange flowers too! As for the flower girl dresses, you can choose black as the color and orange for the bride's maids.
And make the coolest Halloween wedding invitations too! :)
Having a Halloween themed wedding isn't making a joke out of the sacred celebration but instead, making it fun and memorable. What's important is both sides agree upon the theme and are all for it.
Plan a great wedding for yourselves and not for others!
Since you're thinking of getting the kids Halloween costumes, why not think BIGGER? How about a themed Halloween costume for the entire family? You can all be the Chinese royal family! Everyone gets to wear great dresses too! (not to mention it'll look good on photos)
Or just to be original, how about dressing your little girl/boy as a Chinese princess or prince and you (the parents) are his loyal servants. It'll be fun piling up together to trick or treat :)
Girl's beautiful hot Pink traditional Chinese dress (qi pao). Qi Pao was the traditional Chinese clothing worn during the Ching Dynasty (1644-1911 AD). This elegance Pink Chinese dress will transform your little girl to a beautiful and elegant Chinese princess!
Boy's Blue Traditional Chinese Pants Set with frog buttons (embroidered), mandarin collar, dragon brocade, golden edging, and includes a hat with a pigtail!
Everybody loves Monkey King's (also called Sun Wukong) kooky, naughty and brave antics. He also has a lot of cool Kung Fu moves that boys may want to imitate for Halloween
Ask your little boy if he wants to be Monkey King on halloween. If he says yes, then it's time to pull out the creative mommy skills and put together a costume similar to monkey king's.
A red scarf for tying on the shoulders, knot at the neckline.
If you can find an animal print scarf in your closet, wrap around your little boys hips like a skirt. (This is part of his "armor")
Secure scarf at the waist with a plain sash or cloth belt.
If you can get a monkey mask, that'd be great. If you are artistically inclined and are comfortable applying face makeup/ crayons , then make a monkey face on your little boy. For younger boys, I guess masks are more "fool proof" to use because the makeup can be erased away with a sleight of hand on the face.
For the crown, you can make a band he can wear on his head.
Look for a safe stick that he can used as Monkey King's magical rod (his magic staff is called "jungibang"). If you can get something soft and sturdy, the better. When boys congregate in one spot on halloween they can get carried away and use their weapons. So might as well look for something safe.
(If you're up to it, you can also add/ make coordinating wrist bands and shoulder pads to complete his Chinese armor set.)
I was watching the NBC late news and they were discussing about the effect of the economic crunch to the household, to the children, and to the parents.
Most of the Dads were doing Mommy chores because they were laid off and forced to stay home while Moms work and earn for the family. Some think it was really difficult but most said, it was really up to how you adjust as a couple and how you take the situation on hand.
One Dad mentioned he even had to go with his daughter to buys flower girl dress, party dresses and yes, halloween costume. Do you think it will make them less of a man? The answer depends on how the person thinks and perceives things. Being able to do the things Moms do at home empowers the guys more. It would simply show how well rounded they are.
My dad liked watching action movies, including Kung Fu ones, so I can say I grew up watching an assortment of martial arts movies.
One thing in the Chinese movies that scared the heebie-jeebies out of me is the Chinese vampire. I don't know why but their hopping really scared me.
Chinese vampires are unsettled spirits that occupy the dead body. They go hop-hop-hop in a straight line. As you laugh yourself off at this, they go suck your life out. An antidote to quiet the hopping ghost is to paste a yellow paper written with the correct death mantra on its forehead. It senses living beings by breathing, so if you see one hopping in your path, hold your breath in so it will not sense you are there.
Anyhoo, the Chinese vampire is an interesting costume for Halloween. To pull this off as a halloween costume for your daughter:
put a yellow paper with Chinese characters on her forehead
have a toy-vampire teeth that she can wear if she wants,
fake long nails are also okay to put on if she's a little bigger and won't scratch her face out
give her her treat bag
and send her off hopping out the door. You can also try making a Qing Dynasty hat for her to wear if you like.
Tell her that Chinese vampires hop so she can hop for that extra effect. If she gets tired from hopping, you can tell her, yes, she is allowed to walk. (heehee, you know kids...)
Another Halloween Costume Idea using Formal Girl's Dresses
With that beautiful formal dress stored in the closet, aside from being a princess this halloween, your little girl can also be a fairy.
Basics to add for a fairy costume are wands and wings. So you can make these or maybe get afforadable ones at the toy store.
Decide on a theme that will match your little fairy's look. She can have stars, flowers, hearts on her dress and accessories.
For example, if she wants to be a nature fairy, add flowers, vines or leaves on her wand. You can also strew pretty flowers or faux-vines in her hair.
If stars are her favorites you can put a star on her wand and fix her hair up and attach stars.
Her treat bag can also have the same design.
The nice thing about this costume is that even with strap on wings, the basic dress is comfortable to move about in as your little girl walks about and enjoys the holiday.
How to do that? Add COLOR to your flower girl dress! Plain white is the traditional way but time is changing and so must the dresses! Weddings are now upbeat, happy and fun. So what good way to cope with the changing times? Choose the right color for your flower girl dresses. Either one solid color or combination of two.

Photo blogging is posting pictures on blogs instead of words or text. This is one way of showing your daily best shots or using photos to let people know what happened on your day or what you feel.
Photoblogging is also a great way to show the world how adorable and cute your child is. You can also post your child's photo wearing different costumes or beautiful dresses everyday. Who knows? A talent/model agent might discover him/her.
You can try blogger.com or photoblog.com to create you own photoblog.
US Litlle Miss Pageants are getting both positive and negative feed backs. The negativity starts when children are forced to join pageants because of the parent's frustration. But today, I read this really great article and I hope all Moms who would want to join their kids on Pageantry will have the same positivism.

One of the nice things about getting your little girl a nice formal dress for any occassion is that the dress can double as a costume for halloween!
Princess costumes require that you get out that nice dress, get some affordable princess accessories at the toy store and watch your daughter have fun trying out the complete set.
Some accessories you can add from the toy store:
A little tiara is always cute. A scepter can be substituted for toy decorative sticks that come with batteries. Some toy stores have royalty capes.
Hmm, maybe add some nice gloves from the dress section.
If you like making crafts and want to have more fun with your daughter before halloween, why not make a crown and scepter? It'll be more fun, plus if you already have spare materials in the house, more practical.
Set aside an afternoon, gather some cardboard, glue, sequins, beads lying around the house. Make a snack beforehand and call your daughter and make her choose what design she'll want for a crown and scepter. Maybe it'll be nice to draw a draft on paper first and see what she thinks about the design. Agreeing on the design will let you save on materials and your daughter will appreciate that you value her opinion.
On halloween day, fix her hair into a nice formal coiffure, have a little silly coronation rite, hand her her treat bag and see her off to have a fun trick or treat :-)
PS. If your daughter doesn't have a formal dress in the closet to double as a princess costume, it can work both ways. You can get a girls' formal dress now to use for halloween, then store it for the next birthday, school event or family wedding.
I've been watching Old Jacky Chan movies, the ones from the 1970s and 80s, and the setting is always in old China.
I can't help but also admire the heroine's (Jackie Chan's love interest's) costumes. The love interest is always in a Cheungsam pants set and I noticed the beautiful embroidery exquisitely done. How else will she be able to fly through the air to kick b*tt? But then again, nothing's impossible with the classic Chinese movie.
Martial arts heroines costume checklist:
__ Beautiful Cheungsam pants set __ Straw hat __ Long hair in 2 braids __ Cute kung fu shoes (not the black mary jane types, the REAL kung fu shoe) __ Props, like a staff or a fan. You know, the ones that look like non-weapons but can be used to defend oneself? Remember Disney Mulan's fan? Classy use of prop for self-defense.
Then again, there are movies now where the heroine whooshes through the air in intricately embroidered Tang Dynasty dress.
But if you want your little princess to be a Kung Fu action star for a day, the cheung sam pants set is my vote.
Just asking, but is United Nations Day celebrated in your kids' school? I've been doing the rounds in the interwebs and found a few pictures. So far, I've seen 1 or 2 pictures from the US, Indonesia, Philippines and Australia.
The United Nations Day is celebrated during the 24th of October. It's a good time to learn about flags, their costume, location, specialty/ goods of the country and other facts.
All the kids are so cute during UN Day Celebrations!
Usually, kids dress up in the national dresses of the different countries. One time, my child dressed up in the Poland national costume. My niece also attended one year in a Chinese dress pants set.
Other kids celebrate UN Day in their usual school attire, but they also hold activities such as parades and programs.
UN Day in schools is a nice time to learn about different places, but most important, it is a time to impart to the children that everybody, regardless where they come from, are living, feeling human beings who have privileges and responsibilities to help make the world better.
Please share pictures of your kids during their UN Day celebration. That will surely be fun.
If you're looking for a Chinese cheungsam dress or Vietnamese dress (Ao Dai) for your little girls (and boys) to use for United Nations Day, you know where to go ;-)
October is the costume month as I like to put it because of two occasions that we love to dress our kids up. First is the United Nations Celebration and of course the Halloween.
With the economic crisis as wise parents you should sit down and think if you have to buy two different costumes for each occasions of simply buy one and use it for both celebrations. Just use a little creativity to change the look of the costume and I bet it would look good as new.
This is exactly what my friend's kid is doing. There's too much going on in the world that buying two different costumes would be too much.
Let me give you a specific example.
Your kid could wear a girl's formal dress for the United Nations Celebration and use it to be a fairy or princess in Halloween.
Step it a notch, she can be a Chinese Princess for the United Nations and be a Chinese vampire (hello: Edward and Bella) in Halloween.
Whatever way you choose to spend the occasions this month, I hope you and your kid will have a blast! :)

I was reminded halloween was coming up when this flashed while I was passing through a Yahoo page:
Most Popular Halloween Costumes : Chun Li (adult)
Chun Li is a flying kicking girl in the popular classic video game Street Fighter.
Thinking inspritation can be gotten from it for our little EliteDressers, I went back to it. I saw that the new Chun Li costume was a blue cheung sam, with big puff sleeves and ragged edges on it. Its skirt has a wide sash and waist-high slits at both sides. Eep! Nope, can't use it. The style is 1) for adults and 2) it's ugly.
However, I just looked for the more traditonal Chun Li look and saw this:
Ming Na as Chun Li
in the 1st Street Fighter movie
Much nicer. Can be used.
If you and your daughter agree for her to wear a video character this halloween, here's what you will need to create this look:
- Red Cheung Sam Dress - for those with sewing skills, maybe modify the sleeve (the one in the picture is "pretty but tough looking", it was cut following the stitching of a red lace pattern and made into extended sleeves) - two braid buns on either side of the head. maybe can also put flowing ribbons through it - two leather spiked cuffs on each wrist
To avoid the rush, why not start discussing with your child what she wants to be this halloween? If she wants to be a cute fairy or a pretty princess or a courageous Chinese heroine, please head on to www. elitedresses.com for a basic dress. Just add some accessories and a treat bag and she's good to go!
What if your future husband is the one feeling the jitters? It's not rare. It happens just that most men would not talk about it but if you know the person well, you'll see it.
You would want your future spouse to walk down the aisle with confidence (and with clarity that you're the one). So it would be a good idea to check your future spouse's feelings.
Actually, what I discussed on the previous post on Cold Feet, applies to him as well.
What makes it harder is that men tend to keep to themselves when in terms of their true feelings so it's up to you to "read" him.
